NPS Two-Day Accessibility Workshop

Meeting the Challenge will provide two days of training on the concepts of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) and the ABA Accessibility Standards (ABAAS) and its application to park sites, programs, and other areas relevant to the management and operation of a national park.
Training modules will include:

  •  Introduction to Accessibility Laws and Disability Etiquette
  •   The ADA and ABA
  •   ABAAS and Section 504
  •   Accessibility Resources
  •   Disability Etiquette
    •    What does an accessible park look like?
  •   Access to services, activities and programs
  •  “When viewed in its entirety” – Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  •  Self-Evaluation and Transition Plans (SETP)
  •   Two SETP Case Studies
  • Tao House – Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site
  • Giant Forest – Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park
    •    When laws overlap
  •   When to use the ABA; ADA; Section 504; IBC: etc.
  •   Concessioners, Housing
  •   Employment
    •    Trail Requirements – new Standards for Federal Agencies
  •  Trail Standards included in ABAAS
  •  Trail Information:
  • On trailhead signage
  • Printed materials
  • At the Visitor Center
  • On Park website
    •    Accessibility in Practice
  •   On-site walkthrough to understand information learned
  •   Short assessment in small teams
  •  Debrief on-site exercises
    •   Q&A, and Evaluation
